The legendary Svalvogar trail is a truly adventurous drive around the majestic mountain range of Fjallaskagi Peninsula. Part of the route was carved out by Elias Kjaran, a local bulldozer owner who was certain that it was possible to make a road under the steep cliffs. And so he did.
The route is 50 km and driving is slow on the narrow road. It takes about 4-5 hours to make our way around it. As we bump along & under the cliffs and steep mountains, you'll have the option of walking a part of the trail in addition to frequent stops to enjoy the surroundings. Expect to see a large variety of birds and vegetation along with starkling cliffs and rock formations.
There is option to spot various birdlife and the beautiful white Tailed Eagle is definitely on top of that list. They are rare but call this area their home. Seals are basking on the rocks along the shoreline is some locations and sometimes we see whales passing through the fjords. Early in the summer, when the snow is still melting in the mountains, seasonal waterfalls fall through the cliffs in many places. In late summer, the autumn colours appear and wild bilberries become ripe for picking
Please note that this is drive is only open for 4WD drive vehicles with big tires and high clearance. No rental car vehicle has valid insurance for the full Svalvogar circle. For that reason and their own safety we strongly encourage self-drive travellers not to attempt to drive it on their own.
You can request any starting time you like and can even keep it somewhat flexible for you in order to make the most of the weather, tides and sunset (Svalvogar looks great in the midnight sun).
You can make this tour even more exciting by upgrading to 9 hours, which will give you time for one of the following add-ons:
- An easy hiking stop at the majestic Dynjandi waterfall
- A guided mountain trek up to Kaldbakur peak (998m), the highest mountain in the Westfjords
- More time to relax and enjoy the trail, walk for extended parts on your own etc.
- Comfortable clothes and shoes.
- Water bottle.
- Some snacks.
- Don't forget your camera!
