Veiðileysufjörður

Veiðileysufjörður

The fjord Veiðileysufjörður lies between Hesteyrarfjörður and Lónafjörður and no permanent habitation has been in the fjord for more than 100 years. The only remains of human presence are low grass walls after the whaling station in Meleyri…and an outhouse used by campers! The fjord is beautiful with the steep Mt. Lónhorn rising from the head of the fjord. It’s relatively easy to hike up the valleys and get a view over the North side of Hornstrandir and there is a good hiking path to Hornvík Bay over Hafnarskarð Pass. The name of the fjord means “fjord with no fishing”. Try to pronounce the name ten times in a row!

It is only 30 minute boat ride to Grunnavík Bay – the perfect starting point for hiking on the South side of Jökulfirðir. There is also a chance to get simple accommodation and refreshments in a travel service in Sútarabúðir.
Hesteyri is the main gateway for hikers heading into the nature reserve of Hornstrandir. In Hesteyri you will find well maintained traditional houses from around the 1900’s that are regularly used by the owners in the summer.
Hornvík Bay is the place where nature rules unchallenged. Two of the biggest cliffs in the North Atlantic that about 5-6 million seabirds call their home are placed here. Hornvík Bay is truly a nature’s lover paradise.
