Ice climbing
From November to May there are oportunities to find great ice climbing in the West Fjords. Many locations are only a short distance from the nearest road. We have only this one scheduled ice climbing trip but please don't hesitate to enquire for any other dates throughout the winter.
The "Rock and Ice" trip leads you into the wilderness areas of Jokulfirdir and Hornstrandir looking for exciting ice climbing oportunities where no other people normally venture this time of year. We use our expedition yacht AURORA as a mothership, allowing us to climb all day and then come down to the yacht in the afternoon for good food and safe and comfortable accomodation for the night.
There are many different routes to choose from, from easy routes for absolute beginners to major grade routes up to a few hundred meter high. We will adjust the itineraty to suit the interest and ability of the group... and of course depending on the weather.
Aftert the trip you have an oportunity to spend time in Isafjordur and enjoy the annual Easter Ski Week festival with the great Rock Music Festival "Aldrei For Eg Sudur". For the last four years, this rock festival has been held during Easter in Isafjordur. It started as a crazy idea by the great musician Mugison, a local artist and his dad, Papamug, the local harbour master. The charm of the festival is that it´s not like a million dollar moneymaking machine but a small event where everybody gets the same time on stage whether it´s Isafjordur Music school brass band or the Blonde Redhead from NY. Nobody is a star in Isafjordur. The crowd attending the festival, is an odd mixture of the local fishermen, kids, parents, grandparents and young people from all over Iceland. All accommodation was full and some locals opened their houses to visitors that were literally on the street, French, Icelandic, Dutch.. Check our previous blog here.
