Glacier Fjords Ski Camp

Highlights: Backcountry skiing, basecamps in the fjords and geothermal pools.

In May 2011 we did an exploratory trip where we incorporated skiing and camping in the Glacier Fjords. To keep it short, the group went home with a big smile on their faces and good memories of virgin ski runs in good company. We´ll be visiting most of the highlights in the area, the best skiing spots along with a geothermal pool out in an abandoned fjord. Nights will be spent in tents or houses. This late in the season, we may have to walk a bit up the slopes but most of the times we can put the skis on right at the beach. Still we´ll be able to put up the camp on dry ground. Below is the suggested itinerary.

Trip itinerary

Day 1. Departure in the morning with a small ferry boat from Isafjordur. Sail to the beautiful Lonafjordur and set up a camp in Rangali. We will use 2-3 person tents as well as one large “kitchen/mess“ tent. With skis on our feet, we then head for the mountains to make at least two great runs in some of our favourite slopes. It´s bright 24 hours so it´s possible to ski as long as we want.

Day 2. Ski across the mountain pass to Hrafnfjordur. Our zodiac will move the camping gear around to the head of Hrafnfjordur and set up basecamp there, so we can ski really light during the day.

Day 3. Spend all day skiing in the mountains at the head of Hrafnfjordur. There are some great mountains there to explore with steep rollers and smooth ridges. Spend next night again at the camp.

Day 4. We´ll leave most of the heavy camping gear and ski over to Reykjarfjordur. We´ll probably have to leave our skis higher in the valley and hike the last few kilometers down to the coast. There we will sleep in a house. The highlight will be a well deserved soak in the outdoor geothermal hot-tub (swimming pool) with Drangajokull Glacier in the background.

Day 5. We´ll hike again up to where we stored our skis and then continue on skis across Drangajokull ice cap. We´ll arrive in Kaldalon valley where we will be picked up by a car and driven to the farm of Laugaland. Here we will again sleep in a summer house and take full advantage of the nice natural hot tubs.

Day 6. Around noon we will be picked up either by car or boat and taken back to Isafjordur, arriving around 16:00. You can fly to Reykjavik the same day.

Welcome to the website for Borea Adventures, Iceland, your number one stop for Arctic adventures in high latitudes. We provide great adventures and expeditions in Iceland, Greenland, East Greenland, Jan Mayen and Svalbard (Spitzbergen), mainly using our spacious yacht, the Aurora. Our philosophy is to make our trips as silent as possible where we minimize the use of motorized power and encourage physical activities, whether sea kayaking, climbing, sailing, walking and hiking, wildlife, ski touring and backcountry skiing for beginners, experts and people of all ages. The North Atlantic is our playground and we offer scheduled trips for individuals and groups as well as customized itineraries and charter for groups. We travel in harmony with the wildlife of the area: Arctic Foxes, Birds, Seals, Whales and Polar Bears. Aurora is a sturdy expedition yacht and was raced four times around the globe as part of the Clipper Round the World yacht race under the ownership of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. She gives us a great opportunity to provide Arctic adventures in areas that are hard to reach otherwise. We call her our floating basecamp. Our name is derived from Greek mythology where Boreas was the god of the north wind. Aurora on the other hand was the Roman rosy-fingered goddess of dawn. Aurora Borealis is a name for the Northern lights which are common in our area. As we humans have proven through the decades, names can be hard to remember. Especially if a bit of alcohol gets passed around the galley too many times! You might spell our name Boreal Adventures, Borial Adventures, Borea Adventrues and Borealis Adventures. Thank you for visiting Borea Adventures.
