Multi Adventure
Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is the perfect place for all sorts of outdoor activities. The Nature Reserve is a true gem not known to the general traveller. Situated on the NW tip of Iceland, the area has been uninhabitated for more than 50 years and the only way to get there is by boat. Millions of sea birds nest in the big birdcliffs of Haelavik and Hornvik during the short Icelandic summer and are a magnificent sight. The Nature Reserve is the only area in Iceland where the Arctic fox is protected and it´s fairly relaxed among humans. Great hiking and walking routes are between the fjords and bays in the area with picturesque views from the mountains to the sea.
On this trip we´ll incorprate a mixture of sea kayaking, hiking, wildlife watching and glacier walk on Drangajokull Glacier. If you want to experience the best of all worlds, this is the trip for you.
Please contact us if you like to customize a trip itinerary for your group. We can set up different itineraries or different themes with emphazise on sailing, hiking, kayaking, wildlife-watching etc. We can also tie in with other land-activities such as riding on Icelandic horses, rock climbing etc etc.
Trip itinerary
Day 1 - Monday
Departure from Isafjordur at 19:00. Sailing to Leirufjordur and anchor close to Drangajokull Glacier. Option to do a short hike or paddle along the beach before going to sleep for the first night.
Day 2 - Tuesday
Walk in to the bottom of the glacial valley along the beautiful river and up to Drangajokull which is the only glacier in the Westfjords of Iceland. The glacier is very easy to walk on and no climbing skills are needed. We might take a small dinghy along to slide easily down the river at the end of the day. Sail to Hesteyri.
Day 3 - Wednesday
We´ll start the day by looking at the old whaling station in Hesteyri tha was in operation until early 19th century. Walk to Adalvik Bay in the north. Adalvik is a beautiful bay with sand beaches, lush valleys, midnight sun and rivers. The walk will take about 4-5 hours. Depending on interest and the fitness of the group, we might also walk along the beach from Saebol to Latrar. Other option is to kayak along the beach the 4 miles to Latrar. Anchor in Latrar.
Day 4 - Thursday
Walk to the top of Mt. Straumnes. The US army had a radar base on the top of the mountain for a short period in 1953-1960 during the Cold War. The remains of the houses still stands there as a reminder of times gone by. Most of the walk is on old jeep track and is very easy. We end the day by walking down to Rekavik Bay where a lot of drift wood from Siberia washes up on the shores. Rekavik means Driftwood Bay and that name surely fits. Sail to Hornvik Bay.
Day 5 - Friday
The morning will be spent paddling in Hornvík or hiking on the edge Hornbjarg bird cliffs, but not too close to the edge! Hornvik Bay is truly the gem of the Nature Reserve with its sheer 500m high cliffs, great flora considering how far north we are, seals on rocks, 5-6 million sea birds and of course the beautiful and protected Arctic fox.
Option to go sea kayaking along the beach to experience tha nature from a different angle. There are some small caves where birds find shelter that can be explored. After dinner, we´ll set sail to Fljotavik Bay.
Day 6 - Saturday
Short walk on shore before sailing back to Isafjordur in time to catch the evening flight to Reykjavik. Still, we encourage you to spend at least one night in Isafjordur to experience this beautiful town in Iceland.
