Last few weeks SW winds have been predominant on the Denmark Strait instead of the more usual NE winds. This has served to interupt the usual flow of the polar ice south and hold it further north and push towards Iceland. The NE winds normally pushes the ice away from the Icelandic coast and up to the coast of Greenland.  Now the ice edge is only 30 nautical miles from the West Fjords.
