Clipper Venture's VELUX 5 OCEANS solo round the world yacht race started last Sunday in Bilbao, Spain. One of the seven yachtsmen competing is former owner of AURORA, the legendary Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. Sir Robin was the first man to ever sail single-handed, non-stop around the world in 1969 when he won The Sunday Times Golden Globe race on board his yacht ‘Suhaili’. Back then, his record-breaking circumnavigation took a monumental 312 days, during which Sir Robin lived off rain water caught in a bucket. This time, at the age of 67 he hopes to take around 200 days off his 1969 record  in his state of the art Open 60 ‘Saga Insurance’.

The VELUX 5 OCEAN racers headed straight into a bad storm off the coast of Spain with winds gusting to 70 knots. Four of the seven boats are now heading to various ports in Spain for repairs after being damaged in the weather and the waves.

The following was on the race website this morning:  "Sir Robin Knox-Johnston reported this morning that he has suffered damage to his yacht SAGA Insurance overnight whilst sailing in over 60 knots. In a message to his shore team, Sir Robin explained that it was impossible to race in the strong winds and he was attempting to keep himself and the boat comfortable and limit any further damage. Describing the conditions, Knox-Johnston wrote; "The wind sounds like the BBC sound effects for Antarctica.""

Borea Adventures is cheering for Robin and we are following closely this very exciting event. Check the race website on www.velux5oceans.com and Robin's diary published in The Daily Telegraph.

You are right Smari... and one of Robin´s secrets behind his gray power seems to be a healthy mix of bottled medicine from Scotland and Spain. I saw news in the TV yesterday about another scientific research proving the health benefits of good red wine in moderate volumes. Check also Robin´s latest log on the VELUX5OCEANS website: http://www.velux5oceans.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,12345~922198,00.html

Go Robin Go! I liked the name previously given to the boat before he got Saga Insurance as a sponsor. "Grey Power" sounded right for him...

Welcome to the website for Borea Adventures, Iceland, your number one stop for Arctic adventures in high latitudes. We provide great adventures and expeditions in Iceland, Greenland, East Greenland, Jan Mayen and Svalbard (Spitzbergen), mainly using our spacious yacht, the Aurora. Our philosophy is to make our trips as silent as possible where we minimize the use of motorized power and encourage physical activities, whether sea kayaking, climbing, sailing, walking and hiking, wildlife, ski touring and backcountry skiing for beginners, experts and people of all ages. The North Atlantic is our playground and we offer scheduled trips for individuals and groups as well as customized itineraries and charter for groups. We travel in harmony with the wildlife of the area: Arctic Foxes, Birds, Seals, Whales and Polar Bears. Aurora is a sturdy expedition yacht and was raced four times around the globe as part of the Clipper Round the World yacht race under the ownership of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. She gives us a great opportunity to provide Arctic adventures in areas that are hard to reach otherwise. We call her our floating basecamp. Our name is derived from Greek mythology where Boreas was the god of the north wind. Aurora on the other hand was the Roman rosy-fingered goddess of dawn. Aurora Borealis is a name for the Northern lights which are common in our area. As we humans have proven through the decades, names can be hard to remember. Especially if a bit of alcohol gets passed around the galley too many times! You might spell our name Boreal Adventures, Borial Adventures, Borea Adventrues and Borealis Adventures. Thank you for visiting Borea Adventures.
